Si hay alguien que puede poner a USD en el lugar que se merece es este tipo. Hace tiempo cuando estábamos todos flipando con el último profile de Latimer él estaba ahí­ fuera viajando con el All Star Team, puliendo lo que serí­a la Stretch Crew original y haciendo que esta marca fuera legendária. Ahora vuelve al patinaje con una misión quizás un poco mas compleja. Es un honor para nuestro equipo presentar esta entrevista a Mark Korte.

-Preséntate.

Gracias, mi nombre es Mark Korte – el que hace cumplir la ley en USD, soldado reserva del ejército, padre, marido, hijo y Powerslider.

-¿Porqué decidiste dejar de lado el patinaje y porqué has tomado la decisión de volver? ¿Sientes que era el momento de volver?

Eso no está muy lejos de la realidad. Cuando me fuí­ sentí­ que era hora de desarollarme como manager de marca y ventas, algunas cosas en mi vida habí­an cambiado y estaba buscando nuevo retos, algo que me resultara difí­cil de lograr a la vez que divertido y en ese momento me estaba involucrando mucho en el golf como hobby. Así­ que decidí­ meterme en el negocio del golf para ver hasta donde podí­a llegar y lo demás es historia. En cuanto a lo de volver… ha sido como un regalo realmente, he mantenido el contacto con Matthias siempre y hablamos de mi regreso a Powerslide del que yo estaba muy contento, es como mi segunda casa y USD fue una parte muy importante en mi vida durante 6 años. Volver me plantea un nuevo reto y tengo la oportunidad de encabezar un gran equipo de nuevo y ahí­ es de donde tiende mi talento.

-¿Sientes que estás de nuevo en tu sitio ahora que has vuelto?

Tengo que admitir que mi primera semana fue un tanto extraño, pero ahora es como respirar… solo personas que hayan trabajado en el caos/casa de locos/conjunto de talentos de Powerslide saben lo que eso significa, pero es realmente asombroso lo que The Conference puede llegar a aportar, me enorgullece formar parte junto a Bauer, Oli, Marian, Dem y ahora JC y como siempre Matthias. Aquí­ de verdad hay talento, y mola especialmente para mí­ porque trabajo cada dí­a con Oli (por lo menos desde mi punto de vista). Después de que yo me marchara Oli de alguna manera recogió el relevo y lo llevó durante mucho tiempo y eso puede llegar a ser asombroso a la vez que exhaustivo y doloroso. Es como la confirmación de mi filosofí­a o mi viejo plan; traer buen talento en todos los sentidos y niveles ya fueran patinadores o personas. Para ser mas claro, yo le di la primera oportunidad a Oli en USD y es una pasada ver como se ha desarollado y todas las grandes contribuciones que ha aportado a Conference. Ahora somos como un equipo doble así­ que es como una sinergia y se que de muchos recibe un monton de odio (como yo hace años), pero la verdad es que si no recibes un poco de odio, es que no estás haciendo tu trabajo al cien por cien jajajaja.

-Muchas cosas han cambiado en el rolling desde los tiempos de “All Star” en USD. Dinos algunas diferencias buenas y malas que hayas notado.

Bueno creo que el tema del odio es estúpido, todos somos rollers y con eso basta. Tampoco me gusta el hecho de que el listón haya bajado de manera que casi cualquiera puede ser Pro. Es penoso. Antes empezaba con talento y abilidad pero eso solo era un 10% de un Pro, después tení­as un 40% de personalidad, 30% comercialización, 10% estilo y lo que queda se parte entre trabajo ético, comunicación y desarollo. Para dejar las cosas claras, yo desperirí­a al 50% de gente que se hace llamar “Pros” en toda la indústria del rolling. Porque o son de poca confianza o no son auténticos, no tendrí­an que estar esponsorizados igualmente. Yo me fijo en gente como Albert Hooi, Bailey, Aragon, Billy O´neill, Broskow o casi cualquiera que patinara para USD en mi era y eso es lo que un Pro debe ser… basicamente un lider indiscuble, alguien capaz de inspirar a los demás con el solo hecho de ser ellos mismos. Alguien como Jon Julio, Josh Petty, Dustin Latimer, etc. Alguien al que ves patinar y te motivan para patinar, quieres conocerles, les sigues y hablas de ellos… y además tu propio nivel también crece. A lo mejor hay gente que no entiende lo que quiero decir pero basicamente es alzar de nuevo el listón de nuevo para que un “cualquiera” sin habilidades no pueda ni entrar en consideración para ser patrocinado. Nunca vi el mal en ser sincero con alguien y decirle “tu mierda necesita un poco de trabajo tio, vuelve en un año o así­”. Desde mi conocimiento casi siempre acerté y cuando volvieron “en su punto” (después de dejarse guias por mi u otros) tuvieron otra oportunidad. Creo que eso es lo que necesitamos de nuevo. Un poco mas de sinceridad, cojones y autenticidad.

-¿Cuál es tu trabajo en Powerslide exactamente?

Ayudo a llevar The Conference, los Teams. soy el causante del mal para los Team managers (quiénes hacen un gran trabajo, por otro lado el mas ingrato del mundo! yo lo debo saber, lo hice suficiente!) Llevo las ventas en Estados Unidos y mas o menos el tio al que acuden para cualquier problema. un jugador de equipo alque no le importa ir a la guerra si algo en lo que creo. Estoy preparado para pelear si eso es lo que necesitamos (lo que significa que no me quedo en una esquina si hay una decisión que tomar, cojo valor y hago el trabajo) y luego me mantengo al lado de mi idea, vuelve a lo de ser sincero y real. Siempre he sentido que es la mejor manera.

-¿Y tu misión con USD?

Fortalecer el legado, hacer que vuelva con fuerza, enorgullecer a sus pioneros y unirnos para el futuro… Innovar, dominar y seguir siendo verdaderos- desde el 97! Stretch Crew style.

-¿Cómo es trabajar en Estados Unidos mientras tu compañí­a se asienta en Europa?

Esto es un malentendido bastante común. Soy americano pero llevo viviendo en Europa toda mi vida adulta, desde que era soldado fronterizo del 86 al 89. Aquí­ me quedé y eso me ha dado algunas ventajas, pero también algunas desventajas. Una cosa buena es que estoy muy accesible, no me importa usar el teléfono y el email va muy bien, pero el cara a cara es mejor.

-Powerslide no va a tener distribuidor en Estados Unidos a partir de ahora. ¿Cómo afecta esto al negocio en America para vosotros?

Bueno simplemente será mejor – recortando mediadores, contacto directo, no tendremos limitaciones con los productos que podremos ofrecer. A mi me parece un buen trato. A no ser que sea algo que tenga que hablar con el Team… y luego ejecutar. Precios mas bajos, selección mas grande, entrega mas rápida. A mi me suenan todo puntos a favor.

-¿Cómo es para un americano vivir en Alemania? ¿Viviste muchos años ahí­?

Creo que he contestado a esto mas arriba pero si, siendo un americano que ha vivido 23 años en Europa me ha dado mucha capacidad de entendimiento y lo he disfrutado, me veo como una persona de mundo que ve y entiende las dos perspectivas y que al mismo tiempo cuando veo un orangután americano en Europa comportándose como “un americano” lo odio y lo mismo con un europeo siendo “europeo” en America. Me dan ganas de vomitar, pero para dejarlo claro soy un gran defensor de “cuando estás en Roma, haz lo que hacen los romanos” y si estoy en otro paí­s intento ser respetuoso, explorar las costumbres y trato de averiguar como es la gente y he estado alrededor del mundo y me ha servido perfectamente. También me gustarí­a aprovechar para mandar un saludo a todos mis amigos alrededor del mundo, vosotros sabéis quienes sóis y estoy contento de conoceros!

-¿Has notado un gran cambio en la indústria respecto a antes? ¿Bueno o malo?

Bueno no voy a entrar mucho en eso, en mis entrevista en One por ejemplo y en la de Conference entro en detalles. Pero diré, que tenemos que estar todos en la misma pandilla. Nunca he llegado a conocer tanta perra llorona como la que he visto en la indústria actual. y la gente quieres saber luego ¿porqué se están marchando todas las leyendas? En serio tiene que ser para siempre una cosa de mutuo respeto y amor por el patinaje y los patinadores. Quiero decir que ahora, algunso rollers se pueden quedar de pie mirando como le meten una paliza a otro. Eso es una locura! Me confrontaré con cualquiera que toca a un colega roller, o moriré intentadolo. Como soldado tienes que proteger a los tuyos y tienes que destruir a cualquiera que se atreva a meterse con ellos para ser un ejmplo para los demás. Ya he dicho demasiado, pero patinadores en serio… estad los unos por los otros, patinad juntos, divertiros y respetaros y todo irá bien. Es muy simple.

-¿Podemos esperar un All Star team de nuevo?

Por supuesto! Estamos trabajando para restituir a nuestras leyendas, ayudar a formar el futuro de la compañí­a y a recordarnos como llegamos a este punto realmente. Ya tenemos a Rachard Johnson, Aaron Feinberg y Kevin Gillan de vuelta. Kevin se está encargando y yo le doy la bienvenida con los brazos abiertos. Es un poco de lo que nos estaba faltando ultimamente y podéis esperar cosa buena.

-Mi opinión personal es que tenéis alguna estrella pero patrocináis a demasiados patinadores. ¿No es mejor coger a 5-6 estrellas y que se lleven ellos el presupuesto yendo de tour por el mundo patinando y filmando?

Bueno eso es mi estrategia… Tenemos que acortar el equipo asi de simple. Pero para hacerlo como un equipo debemos hacerlo de puertas para dentro. Creo que con tanto legado, no podemos hacer ningún paso en falso… y por una de las razones que creo que es bueno que yo haya vuelto es que no me importa tomar decisiones duras porque lo hago con respeto y dignidad. todo el team sabe de lo que va esto son inteligentes, pero a la vez tenemos un monton de gente y formar un dream team que vaya en concordáncia con el legado de USD no será facil pero yo ya estoy esperando el reto!

-Vimos a Demetrious y Hooi hace semanas de tour por Europa. ¿Hay algún plan de ver al team en España este próximo año?

Yo dirí­a que si pero mejor si le preguntas a Oli. Se que tenemos algunas cosas especiales guardadas para Europa, bueno y para USA también ahora que lo dices.

-¿Has estado alguna vez en Mallorca?

Desafortunadamente no! Me encantarí­a visitar!

-A lo mejor puedes traerte el equipo el próximo año, cogemos un poco de color en la playa, fiesta, patinaje y filmamos un poco.

-¿Puedes avanzanros algo de lo que va a ocurrir en USD próximamente? Nuevo patines, DVDs o miembros del team…

He mencionado algunos antes, pero tenemos un nuevo DVD en construcción y los nuevos patines están asegurados! Y el All Star Team estará presente y ocupando el sitio que le corresponde! Vigilad y observad! CUSTOMS!!!!!! (una pequeña pista!)

-¿Nos va a chocar alguna de las notí­cias que recibiremos en los próximos meses?

Uh si, creo que si. A mi ya me choca ahora!

-Recientemente pudimos ver el patí­n de Gonzo con ruedas Eulogy y el nuevo Throne de Billy O’Neill con guí­as Create Originals. ¿Váis a trabajar con marcas de fuera de Conference para confeccionar los patines como antes? Ya que es dificil encontrar un patí­n con piezas de otras marcas. Como USD recibe piezas de Conference (Botines Sifika, ruedas UC, Guí­as Kizer).

Oh no claro que no! Siempre hemos usado piezas de Senate, 50/50, Eulogy, Fiziks, 2nd Regime, Blow, etc, etc… Nosotros creamos ese concepto! Ya vamos a mantenerlo, somos los innovadores y lo seguiremos siendo. Pero a mi me gusta mas si lo hacemos con gusto jajaja

If somebody can put USD where it deserves again that´s this guy. Back in the day when we were all flipping on Latimers new profile he was out there travelling with the All star team, settling up the original Stretch Crew and making this brand legendary. Now he´s back in rollerblading and probably has a harder mission. It´s an honor for us to present this interview with Mark Korte.

-Present yourself

Thanks, My name is Mark Korte – I am the USD Enforcer, an Army Reserve Solider, Father, Husband, Son and Powerslider

-Why did you leave and why are you back in rolling? Did you feel it was time to return?

Actually that is not far from the truth – when I left, I felt it was time for me to develop as a Sales and Brand Manager, some things in my life had changed, and I was looking for a new challenge, something that would be hard but fun, as I had been getting more and more involved with Golf as my hobby, I decided to go into the golf business and see how far I could go, the rest is history, as for coming back…that was a given really, I was always in touch with Matthias and we talked about me coming back and I was happy to come back as Powerslide is like a second home, and USD was a big part of my life for over 6 years, coming back gives me another challenge and I have the chance to lead a great team again and that is always where my talents lay.

-Do you feel your in place now that you came back?

The first week was strange I will admit, but now it is like breathing…only people that have worked in the chaos / crazy house / talented group of Powerslide can know what that means, but it really is amazing what The Conference comes up with, I am honored to be a part again and with Bauer, Oli, Marian, Dem, and now JC, and as always Matthias . we really do have some talent, it is also especially cool for me to be working with Oli on a daily basis as (at least through my eyes) after I left, Oli kind of picked up the flag and carried it for a long time, and that can be, although amazing, very painful and draining as well…it also is kind of like a confirmation of my philosophy or my old plan as it were, to bring in good talent, on all levels, be it in skaters, or people…to be clear, I gave Oli his first chance at USD and it is kinda cool to see how he has developed and all of the great contributions he has given to The Conference – and now we are like a double team so it is quite a synergy…and I know he gets a lot of hate (as I did back in the day) but the truth is, if you are not getting hated on a little bit, you might not be doing your job 100%! LOL.

-A lot of things have changed in rolling from the all star days in USD… tell us some bad changes and some good ones you have noticed.

Well I think the hate is stupid, we are all rollers, enough said. I also don’t like the fact that the bar has been lowered so almost anyone can be pro – that is just lame…back in the day, it started with Talent and skating ability, but that only made up 10% of the Pro, then you have like 40% personality, 30% Marketability 10% Style and the rest split up in work ethic, communication, and development. To go on the record, I would fire 50% of the so called “Pros” in the entire rollerblading industry – because they are either just faking the funk, or are “fly by nights” who had no business being sponsored anyways…I look at guys like Albert Hooi, Baily, Aragon, Billy Oneill, Broskow, and pretty much anyone who rolled USD in my era and that is what a Pro should be…basically undisputed, and able to inspire though being themselves…basically Jon Julio, Josh Petty, Dustin Latimer etc…you see them skate, you are juiced to skate, you want to get to know them you follow them you talk about them…and your own level rises…maybe people wont understand what I mean, but basically we have to put the bar back up so random fools with no skills wont even be considered for sponsorship…I never saw the harm in being honest “your shit needs work dude, come back in a year or so” – to my knowledge, I was pretty much always right, and when they came back hot (after getting guidance from me for example, or others) they got another shot…I think that is what we need again – a bit more honesty, nuts, and realness.

-Whats exactly your job at Powerslide?

I help run The Conference, the Teams, and I basically am a thorn in the side of my team managers, (who do a great job, which is the most unthankful job in the world! I should know, I did it long enough!) I run Sales in the USA and basically a go to guy for all kinds of shit – basically a team player who does not mind going to war when I believe in something…and will basically knuckle up when need be – (which basically means, I don’t cower in the corner when there is decision to be made, I man up and get the job done) and then I stand by it…just goes back to being hinest and real – I have always felt it is the best way.

-And your mission with USD?

Enforce the Legacy…bring it back to strength, honor our pioneers, and move as a unit into the future…Innovate, Dominate, and Keep it real – since 97! – Stretch Crew Style.

-How is it to work from USA meanwhile your company is in Europe?

This is a common misconception – I am American, but I have been living in Europe for all of my adult life, ever since I was a border soldier from 86 to 89. I stayed and that has given me some advantages, but also disadvantages…one good thing is that I am pretty accessible, and I don’t mind using the phone, e-mail is great, face-to-face or given someone a call is better.

-Powerslide is not gonna have distributor in USA anymore. How is this gonna affect your business in America?

It will basically be better – cutting out any middle men means, direct contact, no limitations on what can be offered and from the horses mouth decisions…basically if I say it, it is a deal…unless it is something I need to talk to the team about…and then execute. lower prices, larger selection, faster delivery – sounds like all good points to me.

-How was it for an American to live in Germany? Did you live a lot of years?

I think I answered that above but yes, being an American that has lived for like 23 years in Europe has given me a lot of insight, and I have enjoyed it, I see myself as a worldy person who sees and understands both views, at the same time, when I see a stupid monkey headed American here in Europe “being American” I really hate it…same for a random European “being European” in America, same deal…makes me wanna puke…but to make it clear, I am a strong advocate of “when in rome, do as the romans do” if I am in another dudes country, I am respectful and I try to explore the customs and get to know what the people are about and I have been all over the world..and that has served me just fine. I would also like to take the opportunity and say hi and a big shout out to all of my friends all over the world, you know who you are and I am glad to know you!

-Do you see a big change in the industry from before? Good or bad?

Well I wont go too much into that, I had a One interview for example and a Conference interview where I get into detail…but I will say, we need to be in the same gang, real simple…I have never met more whining little bitches than I have in the current industry – and people wanna know why all of the legends are getting out??? Seriously it is and always should be about mutual respect and love for Rollerblading an Rollerbladers…I mean nowadays, some rollers will stand by and watch another get beat down…that is wack man! I will go toe to toe with anyone touches a fellow roller, or die trying, but that is just me, as a soldier you have to protect your own, and you have to destroy with extreme predjudice anyone who dares mess with you to make it an example for others…I have said too much already, but Rollers really…be down for each other, roll together, have fun, respect each other and it will all be good. Real simple.

-Can we expect a real All star team again?

Damn Skippy! We are working now to reinstate our legends, to help form the future of the company and help remind us of how we got here in the first place – we already have Rachard Johnson, Aaron Feinberg, and Kevin Gillan back on KG is taking charge and I welcome it with open arms, it is a bit of what we have been missing, and YOU WILL expect good things to come.

-My personal opinion is that you have stars of the game but you sponsor too many skaters. Isn´t it better to take a 5-6 member all star team and make them take the budgets touring the world and filming?

Well, that I my strategy…we have to downsize, plain and simple…but we do it as a team, and we keep that stuff in house. I think with such a legacy, we cant be half steppin…and one of the reasons I feel that it is good that I am back is that, I don’t mind making the hard decisions, because I do it with respect and dignity…the whole team knows the deal they are intelligent, but at the same time we have a great bunch of guys, and forming a dream team that will stay in line with the USD Legacy is not gonna be easy, but I look forward to the challenge!

-We saw Demetrious touring Europe the last weeks. Is there any plan of the USD team to come to Spain next year?

I would say yes, but that is something you might want to ask Oli…I know we have some special shit planned for Europe though, well the US too for that matter.

-Have you ever been to Mallorca?

Unfortunately not! And I would love to visit there too!

-Maybe you can bring the team to the island next summer… we´ll get some beach, party, skating and filming done.

Well I tell you what, how about we find a co- sponsor in Mallorca, make it a party and lets make it happen! I am fully down.,.

-Can you advance any news from what we can wait for from USD in the next months? New skates, DVD, or team members?

I mentioned some before, but a DVD will be in the works, New skates are a given! And the All Star Team will be in full effect! Watch and see! – CUSTOMS!!!!!! (small hint!)

-Are we gonna get shocked by some news in the next months?

Uh yeah – I am guessing yes. I am already in shock myself!

-Recently we saw the Gonzo skate with Eulogy wheels and Billy O´Neills Throne with Create Original frames. Is it gonna work with brands outside the Conference to setup skates just like before? What I mean is that it´s hard to get a skate without the setup parts from other brands. Like USD gets of course the Conference parts (Kizer, UC Wheels, Sifika liners).

Oh naw, hell no! we have always used parts from Senate, 50/50, Fiziks, 2nd Regime, Blow, Eulogy, etc, etc…we made that concept! And we stand by it – we are the innovaters, and will continue to be .- but I like it with flavor! Lol!
