Checking In With Daniel Kinney on Bitter Cold Showdown X – 10/01/19

I’ve been trying to nail down Daniel Kinney for a few weeks now but with crazy day job schedules it just hasn’t worked out. So, we finally caught up on the phone to get a quick low-down on this year’s Bitter Cold Showdown X. Here’s the phone interview… See y’all out at BCSD! -B

BE-MAG: SO, HOW’S IT GOING? LIFE BEEN PRETTY CRAZY LATELY OR WHAT? GLAD WE CAN FINALLY CATCH UP!

KINNEY: Yeah, things have been a bit nuts… besides BCSD, working on some ads for the Super Bowl, so… been a bit crazy!

YEAH, NO STRESS THERE WHEN FOLKS HAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TIED UP IN ADS! HAH!

WELL, WHERE DO YOU WANT TO START? IT’S BCSD AGAIN; WHAT’S GOING DOWN THIS YEAR?

Well, yeah, 10 years! This year is going to be big, of course! It’s the first time in awhile that we’re repeating with the same venue, which is great because we’re getting used to things and can work with that. Priority #1 this year is bleachers and seating. There’s an open area in the park that we discovered we can take advantage of… a lot of folks kind of congregated in that space last year so we’re going to put in bleachers/risers which will clear the course for the contestants and for media as well as help all the spectators see things better. So that should be a huge improvement all around!

Priority #2 is that I’m doing everything I can to produce a TV-ready, really polished edit of the contest. Complete with on-the-spot interviews as guys are finishing their runs, commentators, etc. So, yeah, things are falling into place!

WHAT ELSE HAS BEEN IN PLAY THIS YEAR?

Well, everything is falling into place really well. The only hindrance so far is that we just got word that the park owner (Modern Skatepark) was injured really, really badly in a snowboarding accident out in Montana… like really bad. He’ll be fine, but is out of commission for a few weeks, so that’s made things interesting.

THAT’S HORRIBLE! GREAT TIMING, EH?

Yeah, it’s not good, but things will fall into place just fine; they always do…

HOW’S IT GOING SO FAR IN TERMS OF LINING UP SPONSORSHIPS, ETC.?

So far so good! Now that we’ve been doing this awhile everyone is really on board. The event budget is all worked out and we’re trying to bring on a few more companies, but we pretty much have every major sponsor lined up now like Nimh, Valo, Razors, Remz, Xsjado, USD, Rollerblade, etc…

ANY SPONSORS FROM OUTSIDE OF THE SPORT THIS YEAR?

We’ve really done a much bigger push this year in terms of drawing sponsorship from outside of the sport, but are not getting much of a response. Unfortunately, folks outside of the industry still find rollerblading a shaky place to put their sponsorship dollars these days, but…everyone’s working on changing that. I’ve been working with JoJo of Winterclash a lot as well and sharing ideas because they have a similar approach. Nothing big yet, but we’re pushing hard to draw folks in from outside of rollerblading. That’s really one of the big reasons I’m pushing the TV-ready production… In past years even though it’s been a great DVD, it’s still been a “skate video” and I really want it to be something that’s good enough to air on TV and promote rollerblading the way it needs to be.

I HEAR THERE’S A BIG MYSTERIOUS PREMIERE LINED UP?

Yeah! I really can’t share that yet, because the company hasn’t made it public; but it will be huge! Everyone will be really stoked on this once the details come out… that’s all I can say for now…

THAT’S FAIR. SO, BESIDES YOUR CRAZY DAY JOB AND BCSD, WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE GOING ON?

Well, I’ve been busy working on the WRS Tour plans for this year and revamping things there. We’re tentatively planning on the world finals being at Rye Airfield in New Hampshire… It’s an amazing park – really big, and being on the East Coast would draw a lot more spectators. That’s something that was lacking in Vegas, unfortunately. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great comp, but there weren’t a lot of spectators there to watch it, which is kind of strange. So, the East Coast thing will be a bigger draw for spectators and Rye would be a great venue! It’s very coincidental because the owner of the park was looking to do a really big rollerblading contest in the fall and so this should work out great!

YOU INVOLVED IN ANYTHING ELSE IN ROLLING RIGHT NOW?

Sitting on a bunch of AIL footage that was shot for Pam and Richie and is now being edited… so, yeah, “in my spare time.” Have a great highlight edit and than lots of mini-interviews with a lot of the younger competitors and they’re all so stoked on rollerblading – which is really cool to see right now! So just need to finish up that work for AIL.

COOL! WELL, THANKS! WE’LL RUN AN “IN-THE-KNOW” ON BE-MAG AND KEEP SPREADING THE WORD LEADING UP TO THE COMP!

Definitely! We get such a good turnout every year, but this being the 10th year we’re really hoping even more folks will come out! So if you’re going, invite your friends too! I have no comprehension how it’s been 10 years already. It’s really humbling to know thatbladers just come out and sponsors are on board now without me having to convince everyone like in the beginning – very cool!
